Riverside Inyo Mono San Bernardino
(RIMS)
Science and Engineering Fair
April 5, 2011

Dear Colleagues,
The 2011 RIMS Science and Engineering fair concluded on Wednesday,
April 6th, 2011 with an Awards Ceremony at the Orange Show before
an elated crowd of proud parents, teachers, and science professionals.
RIMS covers Riverside, Inyo, Mono, and San Bernardino counties.
The Fair was a spectacular event! As judges we saw so many ideas,
projects - so much creativity! Over 750 students from schools in
the four counties participated in this regional science fair to
compete in 38 different areas of study ranging from Physics to Materials
Science, Mathematics and Engineering Research, in both Junior and
Senior Division. The students who won at their local level and so
qualified for participation at this regional science fair are simply
the best and the brightest, and the competition between them is
very impressive.
26 Caltrans volunteers, mainly PECG members, but also several biologists,
etc. from other units, were among the more than 100 volunteer judges
from the educational community, business, public, and private sector.
They selected the finalist for the awards. Projects were judged
on creativity, scientific thought, thoroughness, skill, clarity
and presentation.
IE PECG has established three PECG awards at the RIMS Science Fair.
The special awards winners were selected by a PECG Section team
of four special awards judges who scored students using IE PECG
criteria.
The winners of our special awards are:

Elementary Division – Savannah Messenger from
May Ranch Elementary, Val Verde USD won $250 with her project “Shape
Up, Armature!”

Junior Division – Brenden Geary from Pioneer
JHS, Upland USD won $500 with his project “Ham Radio Emergency Aerial
Repeater HEAR”
Senior Division – Jessica Richeri from Centennial HS, Corona-Norco

to Eliminate the Traffic Problem”
All students received bronze, silver, or gold medals thanks to

The fair was a big success and received media coverage. The involvement
of State Engineers and professionals from other units was much appreciated.
The kids were elated, inspired, motivated and happy because the
fair made a difference in their lives and future aspirations, thanks
to you!
Sincerely,
Ferdinand de la Cruz, IE PECG President
And
